The choice isn't as black and white as you outline, Dan. Law enforcement has many laws and other tools at its disposal. They're not dependant on this single Act for catching criminals. They have always had the ability to look at individual online users' private communications with the requisite legal permissions. I know this as fact. The difference with the Online Safety Act is that all online users will be constantly under scrutiny: everyone is considered a potential offender. That's a huge change (in practice and psychologically) in how society and it's law enforcement systems deal with citizens' safety and security and will at least result in a huge diminution of respect and trust. Equally, without doubt, there will be gross overreach. That's always been the way with the powers that gvt grants itself. There are better, more focused ways to deal with crime which is facilitated via the internet.
