  1. Just to note that 'we' didn't let them in. Whilst we have done a very good job of welcoming immigrants, it was Bliar and his agenda to undermine, de-nation and regionalise the UK, thus currying favour with the EU to fulfill his overarching ambition to become EU president. The task to be generous was imposed on us by stealth.

  3. That's an interesting perspective. I mean that genuinely - I'd not thought of this before. Thank you. I'm onside too. I much appreciated Harry Miller's appearances because he did something real and courageous and he's not 'posh'. This wokeism, as every deranged ideology, ultimately impacts non-posh people far worse than it does those at the top. I'm going to have to think some more about all this...

  4.  @paul756uk2  Oh, what a great dream! I've been thinking lately that TPTB have made an almighty mess since, say, the late 1990s. I mean a truly monumental mother of all debacles behind the scenes. Compounded by 9/11, 2008, and then covid, it's just got worse and worse. What better than such as the lunacy of wokeism to distract and engage people and erase those who speak against this destructive ideology? We can clearly see the calibre of our global leaders - how on earth can we have hope that we're going to thrive again as a nation, as a species? Is this why they're planning to impose a 'Great Reset'? To try and undo the mess they've made? That could well return us to the worst of bygone eras! (Not to mention the erasure of democracy...) At the beginning of covid, people who thought that it was an escaped lab bug were called 'conspiracy theorists' and even those with expert knowledge were shouted down. Now, we learn that, yes, it was almost certainly a lab-created bug. It's time that somehow we stop all these machinations and thoughtfully engage in returning to a simpler, more honest life - as a people together, not as polarised pawns of all the out of control engineering, illicit partying, louche and/or senile leaders, overweening $multibillionaires etc! IMHO. So yes, bring on your better vision of life!!

  5. I grew up overseas (parents in gvt service) in the 70s-80s. I listened to everything on the World Service. I reckon that I received the fruits of world class university education through WS, it prepared me wonderfully for actual uni in the UK. But that was before both the BBC and HE went sour. Now it's all such a travesty.

  7.  @paul756uk2  I believe you're right about more social mobility back then. It was the era of the state grammar school where children were given many of the benefits of public school education which equipped them for upward mobility (or 'bettering their lot'!). As a former governor of a large comprehensive school, I'm quite certain that the majority of these schools, whatever their merits, do not afford pupils such entrees. It's something to do with making everyone equal....but the reality is that we're not equal once we're all out in the wider world. Estuary English is also one of my bugbears. Not, per se, because it's a regional accent but because its speakers are often prone to mispronunciation ('wevver' instead of 'whether' etc etc.) and 'casualising' the language, all of which makes speakers sound poorly educated and sloppy, and like they're on a fun chat show all the time. It can also remove authority from statements that need authority behind them.
