I looked up the history of McKeesport and it was originally settled in 1755 and was named after John McKee who settled it and 1795, it was named "McKeesport" because his son ran a ferrying business there and the place was known as "McKee's Port"...
Bituminous coal was discovered and from 1832 on, the town grew into a city...
As for the old houses, moat of them were built in the late 1800's and into the early to mid 1900's as industry flourished... There are plenty of houses of the same era all throughout the region...
Once the mills started shutting down, McKeesport, Pittsburgh, Aliquippa, Ambridge, etc. crashed... And like many in Detroit, Gary, Flint, Pontiac, etc., those who couldn't leave just have to "make do"...
And, the "real estate bubble" and "drug pandemic" didn't help either !
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and lived through it all until my job situation prompted me and my wife to move to Maryland for better job opportunities...

Charlie,
In looking at your videos, it seems that dumping trash in front of abandoned houses and in empty lots is universal and not peculiar to Detroit...
The segment from 0:35 - 1:16 was hideous ! And yet people live there...
Meanwhile in Baltimore, 10 years ago there were 16,800 vacant houses and other buildings...
After 10 years and $ MILLIONS, there are 16,500 vacant houses and buildings ! < sarcasm
Then there was the pitiful, pathetic, "circus" starring the Mayor Catherine Pugh, the new police commissioner who apologized to the audience of a rap concert for "200 years of oppressive police behavior", and other assorted unfunny clowns that came to the "North and Pennsylvania" neighborhood ( Charlie shot a video of it ) and her solution for the crime problem was to tell the local "bodegas" to close at 9pm to cut the crime and homicides ( there have been 87 so far ) and she asks "why there are so many of them" ?
You can't make this stuff up !

Roger,
The houses that are not burned are basically condemned...
They have no running water or electricity, have been stripped of the electrical wiring and copper plumbing, the floors and ceilings are caving in, they're full of black mold, etc. So they aren't any better than the sidewalks...
They should be burned totally flat...
Also, it would be prohibitively expensive to rehab them and see them vandalized once again...
The homeless themselves need to be re-taught the basics of behavior that are taught to us as children onward...
They are similar to "feral cats and dogs" and will need "re-humanizing and re-socialization" as well...
Then, there are the mental issues ( untreated mental illnesses, drug abuse and addiction, alcoholism, etc. )...
My wife and her sister tried to help the homeless... My sister in law had her and my wife's childhood home with precious family photos and belongings burned for her efforts... And we spent close to $4,000 and got nothing in return for the "investment" ! My wife and her sister are soft headed as well as soft hearted...
Never again !

To answer your questions, sdfrz... Detroit had been losing population since the early '60's and the 1967 riots didn't help... Then, the crash of the auto industry, city fiscal mismanagement, the crack epidemic, etc. all did their parts as well...
And some of these homes may have owned by elderly homeowners who either wound up in nursing homes or died and left no heirs or the heirs didn't want the houses...
As to "who owns them"... If the owner defaults on their mortgage, foreclosure ensues and the bank or mortgage company owns it...
Fail to pay property taxes and the city or county seizes it.. If the property is occupied, there's an eviction...
And the government doesn't take care of its property very well...
And those residents left behind are stuck with worthless properties that they are still paying inflated property taxes on ( the taxes never "crashed" like the property values did )... Then, there were the "home equity loans"...
But, if you watch Charlie's videos, you can see other streets that have no vacant houses while other streets are like the ones shown...

Actually, those neighborhoods date back to the late 1800's - early 1900's to house a growing city full of workers and a neighborhood like Pigtown was built near a hog slaughtering plant... ( Oriole Park is built on the site of the former Park's Sausage plant )...
The long demolished Wagner's Point neighborhood was built around the Wagner meat processing plant...
There may have been other small businesses in the beighborhoods, but they are mostly gone...
The riots of 1968 did a lot to drive people and businesses out of Baltimore, so the neighborhoods deteriorated...
As for being "outdated"... There are still pockets of decent streets with well kept row houses as well as re-developed or if you prefer, "gentrified", neighborhoods like Canton, Federal Hill, and other streets near them...
I also see plenty of new townhouse communities in the counties that are developed along the same lines... Close neighbors, etc.
Many of the better inner city rowhomes are priced over $100,000... And you get an alley and plenty of concrete and asphalt for that...
Baltimore City is continuing to shrink in population, so tearing down, building new houses, and gentrification can't cure that when there are poor services, schools, property taxes that are easily double of the property taxes of Baltimore County which surrounds it...
They should let nature take it back...

Why don't you start a business and run it according to your Marxist philosophy instead of spouting the tired, old, discredited screed ?
If Engel hadn't funded Marx...The world would not know of him... Marx had no money himself...
And I also know all too well about inflation... But, I quickly moved on to better jobs as I acquired experience and could show that I would be an asset to their business...
I worked my way through college, had an apartment, bills, etc.
In short, I was a mature adult and not a spoiled kid...
And I also had to "start from the bottom" and work at jobs that I didn't like in my later years, but I didn't stay there long...
If I had to do one thing over... I would have gone to a technical college or trade school instead of the 4 year college...
A local air-conditioning company has an ad on Facebook for HVAC techs, etc. and are offering up to $70,000/year for experienced techs and helpers and apprentices are earning more than minimum wage...

Marxist Alpha,
How typical of your own punkish, know nothing arrogance !
I didn't have a family growing up and have been on my own since 17, so...
I scrimped and saved and did without... I lived through the 13% inflation of the Ford/Carter years and watched regular gasoline go from 55.9ยข per gallon to $3.00...
I lost my job when the steel industry collapsed the economy and the jobs that remained weren't that great or high paying...
I bought my house in 1990 and had a 10.5% mortgage with 10% down... Over the years, I was able to get the rate down to 5.00%...
And I still have 7 years to go...
As for prosperity... Try learning a trade... This past March, the local plumbers union offered a 5-year apprenticeship program for people to ultimately become "journeyman" plumbers earning $75,000+ per year... The program was a mixture of work and classroom study...
I hear ads on the radio regarding welders, fabricators, fork lift operators, etc. and they pay better than fast food...
Nobody owes anybody anything...
I wonder how many of those that you whine about own smartphones, laptops, flat screen TVs, etc. ?
As for wishing me death... Right back at ya, punk....

Please Explain,
I listen to Tommy Sotomayor and caught your reference... But, I see it in real time...
A "self entitled, privileged" black woman tried to intimidate my wife, who spent 20 years in correctional nursing at the State Prison... My wife literally "roared" back at her in her chilling, frightening, "prison voice" until the woman was curled up in a puddle of her own urine on the floor of the store where this happened... Then, it was "fangs, claws, and a black reptilian glare"...
And she knows how to apply "submission holds" and how to break fingers, wrists, hands...
She's not bothered by them anymore...

Marxist Alpha,
I worked hard for what I have and I didn't stay in the same job and even moved to take a job...
I'm far from wealthy and due to the increased prices, I don't go out much... So, if I'm not spending money, the workers will lose out.
Now, multiply that by millions...
Seattle ordered a $15.00/hour minimum wage and restaurants are closing... How does that help ?
Small business owners are the ones that suffer... And they cut staff to cut costs... Then, there's Obamacare...
You mentioned "the worst economy in 50 years"... From 2009 to 2016, it's been OBAMA'S ECONOMY !
Miniscule economic growth, job creation... Shall I go on ?
This is what Marxist socialism does to an economy... You and everyone of your fellow travelers own it !
Unlike you and whoever is teaching you the Marxism crap, I lived through the good and bad economic times... I experienced the death of the steel industry in Pittsburgh and Western PA.
All of those good paying jobs... gone... The mills are gone as well...
When the "Big 3" started downsizing their cars and ordering less steel... And there was steel dumping and people bought foreign cars because they were well built and inexpensive...
And unions priced their members out of jobs as well...
I notice that you don't attack big sports or entertainment... Why ?
If you hate the wealthy, you should be excoriating them... Talk about being "over paid" for the product they put out... And if you buy their products, you...Yes,you, make them rich !
I don't do so... I live well without any of it...
2
-
Marxist Alpha,
You're the one who should read economics and not just the Marxist/Socialist/Communist versions...
In fact, you should open a business based on Marxist principles and see what happens...
Do you remember the guy who gave everyone of his employees a $70,000/ year starting salary... regardless of skills ?
Well, his company tanked...
So, what is the economic benefits of that ?
Also, entry level firefighters, EMTs, Paramedics start out at $30,000/year...which is $15.00/hour, based on a 2,000 working hours year...
And they face more dangerous situations than the McDonald's workers or you...
2
-
Marxist Alpha,
I don't own a TV so Roger Ailes never influenced me... I was a Conservative when I was 15 after seeing where LBJ was headed in 1965...
As for reading... You should find a "Capitalism for kids" or "for Dummies" or look at Adam Smith and Milton Friedman for kids...
I've read the adult versions myself...
As for Obama... Do you remember his "You didn't build that" statement ?
That's pure Socialist thinking... If you were to start and build a business, should I or Obama lay claim to your efforts ? Or to discount them ?
If I want to draw up plans for a business, I don't need the "people" (read "government") to help me do so...
And I would pay taxes on what my business earned as well as my income... I also pay for the roads, sewers, bridges, etc. that Obama touted...
He's as Socialist as Bernie Sanders in his heart... And if you learned and experienced what Marxist/Socialist philosophy has done...
Hey, what about Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil, Bolivia, China, Russia, and the other "variations on a theme" ?
Nobody from this "evil" country are beating a path to them... Yet everyone wants to come here... Hmm...
If you went to college, you should ask for a refund because it taught you nothing and didn't teach you skills either..

As for "cash incentives" to leave... As a retiree, let me bring up some points... There's the issue of the next home being far more expensive than the one that they are already in... They may not have much equity, if any, to work with and taking out a mortgage in one's 60's+ isn't a good idea... Also, the mortgages for their current houses are probably paid off ( mine will be paid off in 08/2024... I started it in 1990, 30 years FHA... Started with an interest rate of 10.25% and through "streamlining", I was able to get it down to 5%, but that involved extending the pay off date...
Another consideration is the cost of living, especially for retirees... I live in Maryland, in the Baltimore/DC area and it's expensive... Since we both had jobs, moving somewhere else was out of the question...
Then, there are all of the expenses in moving, selling, etc.
My wife and I will die here in our home of 30 years ( and counting ) as many other retirees do...

Detroit has been losing population since the 1960's and the riots didn't help...
Then, when the auto makers started "downsizing" their cars, less steel would be required... Those workers who could get out did... That started in 1976... Also, the "gas crisis" of the mid 1970's made for importing small foreign cars... Another "nail in the coffin"...
And the rest is history...
As for the vacant houses... Not only those who lost jobs and moved created them... Many of the houses were owned by senior citizens who either wound up going to nursing and other similar homes or died...
There were either no heirs or the heirs did not want the houses as they were having their own housing issues...
Many houses probably are in serious disrepair, needing expensive repairs that can't be afforded...
Many were seized for back taxes or unpaid water bills or were foreclosed...
Either the banks, mortgage companies, or Detroit owns them...
Let's not forget the " mortgage re-financing" mania and the "crack epidemic"... Where did all that money go ?
Also, people who had "Reverse Mortgages" also lost their homes due to not paying their property taxes because they weren't reminded that while they were no longer paying a mortgage, they still had to pay property taxes...
Then, there was the hyper mania of inflating house prices ( real estate "bubble" ) and property taxes... Then, the "bubble" burst and totally wiped out everyone's equity, taxes were unaffordable and people walked away...
And recent events of t

Renato Sapiens,
I totally agree !
The recent Olympics are a case in point... Swimming, etc. were dangerous due to the high level of bacteria in the water, not to mention half sunken couches, and other things...
That doesn't get mentioned in the flashy, splashy, tourism brochures... < sarcasm
Then, there are the favelas that some here in America view as somehow "sacred" with moony, lachrimose, eyes... ( See Rousseau's "Noble Savage" )...
But, you live there and see things as they are and not as they should be... ( See Ambrose Bierce's "Devil's Dictionary" for the definition of a cynic... )
I also see things as they are... Not as they should be...

I agree with you regarding needing the statistics on people hit by falling bullets...But, I can tell you that it's a minuscule number, compared to the daily, weekly, monthly, and annual homicides and accidental shootings, etc.
As for "celebrating" the New Year... One year, my ordinarily quiet, typical suburban, neighborhood sounded like this video and I also heard some big caliber shots being fired off around our closely spaced houses... It sounded like a street battle !
The County Sheriff and Deputies were called and things got real quiet and guns were rarely heard again and the "energy" of that was transferred into fireworks on New Year's at midnight and some of the other national holidays and some of the "shows" are better than the "professional" ones !
And if guns are going to be used to "ring in the new year", they should be used away from houses...
And I sincerely hope that the gunfire in the gang video was not inside the house... It was hard to tell...
