There's a book titled " Madness in the Streets" by Rael Jean Isaac & Virginia C. Armat which chronicles what happened when when mentally ill people were "de-institutionalized" and given their "rights" and left to rot by psychiatrists and the laws... I worked in mental health when that happened and there was no place for these "de-institutionalized" people to go and since they all were on various meds, there was no way to keep them on them so that they could be functional... I left the field shortly after that... I just couldn't be an accomplice to this crime...
