It has been said that, back at the time of William Shakespeare, ol' Bill had an active vocabulary of 15000 words. In contrast, here in 2023, it is believed that the average English speaking American "gets by" with a vocabulary of only 3000 words. Now, right away, most people would say that modern life (here in 2023) is endlessly MORE COMPLEX than daily life back at the time of William Shakespeare. But if that is so, then why has English vocabulary GONE DOWN by a factor of 5? Wouldn't life involving more complexity demand more words with which to discuss such complexity? Methinks there is a paradox looming here!
