If it weren't for the difficulties with the battery (charging, fire risk, craps out in cold weather), I would love to have an electric car. An industrial grade electric motor is SO indestructible, needs very little maintenance, and can take endless amounts of physical abuse, when compared with a mechanical transmission and a mechanical Internal Combustion engine. The fastest and surest way to solve the battery issues would be to implement Aluminum/Air battery technology. To do this, we would need to create an infrastructure for distributing Aluminum metal plates, and for recycling such metal plates. Given that we already recycle Aluminum, all over the place, this shouldn't be too hard.
