Judeo-Christian religion augments American liberty, because our Constitution claims that every citizen has un-deprivable rights, sourced from a supernatural being, referred to as God. This puts American liberties safely out of the hands of a dictator. At the same time, our Constitution does not require American citizens to belong to a central, government-espoused religion.

Automation, which is a product of Reason, could have avoided any perceived need for the human subjugation known as Slavery. Today, here in the USA, no one would secure.a team of 50 slaves to dig-out a trench WHEN just ONE GUY, using a diesel-powered excavator, could do the task in a single afternoon.

@muxion Do you mean to say that, back in the day, the slaves that knew how to use a cotton gin, and had access to a cotton gin, were suddenly priced higher, by a factor of 10? Then again, if every plantation had cotton gins, wouldn't the slave-value "mark up" be canceled out, because every slave's value was increased, across all plantations, equally?

@muxion Maybe the story I heard was false, but wasn't the Cotton Gin actually invented by a slave? You have to wonder why a slave, who could not profit from his own invention, would feel incentivized to build it, in the first place.
