  1. Slavery persisted because automation hadn’t sufficiently evolved, yet. Nobody is going to “round up” 100 slaves to dig a long ditch WHEN only one guy can hop into the cab of an excavator (and dig the ditch in the course of a single afternoon.) The scary part is, if we suddenly LOST automation technology, then we would suddenly revert back to instantiating slavery.
