  1. I studied German in school. I traveled to Holmes county many years ago to test out my skills. Turns out, what I learned in college is "High German" and the Amish speak "Low German" although we could understand MOST of what each other were saying, there was still a large gap between the languages. Mostly due to slang and pronunciation changes that have happened over 200+ years.
