For every country that became member the governments of those countries had to apply and meet certain political, economic and military criteria, set out in the Alliance’s 1995 Study on Enlargement. These criteria include a functioning democratic political system based on a market economy; fair treatment of minority populations; a commitment to resolve conflicts peacefully; an ability and willingness to make a military contribution to NATO operations; and a commitment to democratic civil-military relations and institutions. 3. If you want to talk about "promises", promises actually enshrined in a international treaty, maybe you want to talk about 1994 Budapest Memorandum (5th December). In it, Ukraine, a nuclear power at that time, voluntarily gave up its nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees. The US, Great Britain and Russia welcomed the decision of the Kyiv regime to accede to the non-proliferation agreement and pledged, among other things, to respect the independence and "existing borders" of Ukraine. How about that promise?

@davedave3520 so you are suggesting if USA did it to innocent people Russia should be allowed to do it too? Are you off your rocker? I'm not here to sing praises to USA, far from me... I'm here against allowing Russia to victimise and kill Ukrainians again If you are blinded by your hate for USA it's your problem, but your hate should not open the door for Russia to do it again to other people. @davedave3520 are you off your antipsychotics??? Talking about destruction and telling me Russia is great??? They starved their own population twice in less than 30 years. They invaded the half of Europe and took factories and railways piece by piece from the invaded countries to Russia. The Communists regimes forced on the people of eastern Europe were put in power for half of century with Russian tanks on streets. My grandmother and 2 of my aunties were raped (the youngest just 10 yo), my grandpa and his 2 brothers were taken to forced labour camps in Siberia and we still didn't get their bones back... And like my family were millions of Eastern Europeans that suffered for decades. Now eff off to Russia if you like them that much!
