Becoming a member of EU is not like getting a library card. It's complex, building institutions take time, it must be done properly or we end up with a bigger Hungary as a member

@david-eh1vg Sweden and Finland are members of EU for almost 3 decades. I don't know what you are talking about

@RuneDrageon oh... NATO has its own set of criteria for admission and both countries fit those to a T ... That's different. NATO and EU are not the same thing!

@david-eh1vg we all see their sacrifices but those does not equal with strong democratic institutions. We admire them for the drive they have to fight for their country but does not qualify them for membership. And I'm one of those Europeans that wanted Ukraine as a member for quite some time. What we want and what's doable are two different things

@mrityunjaytripathi5588 wtf are you talking about? Be precise... Nobody asked nobody else to become Germany. The conditions to become EU member are known as "Copenhagen criteria". Just use Google, doesn't hurt
2
@mrityunjaytripathi5588 and if you knew how to use Google you would know that EU had quite a few trade wars with the Americans and every time they won.... EU is nobody's dog!

@maryanchabursky9148 I'm sure EU takes it seriously and that's one of the reasons they won't promise you unicorns! Don't take it the wrong way... It took Ukraine more than 3 decades of struggle to get where it is... It takes time, trust me you don't want to hurry the process. Democracy is like a marriage, needs work and time, every day without exception!

@maryanchabursky9148 you need the member states to be invested in the process and push, that's what your politicians must do, diplomacy! Because in EU every member has a veto on the Ascension on a new member. You'll have to learn to be patient and diplomatic and give and take and stop being an elephant in a china shop. I'll give you an example: Your country dragged a canal straight into the Romanian Danube Delta. Romania asked your government multiple times to stop doing that because the ecological balance in the area is very important. Your gov stopped for a while and then did it again few weeks ago killing some fauna in the process... Now ask Romania why is not enthusiastic about your ascension. Other states have other reasons... I know some western states see the democratic slide of Poland and see your gov "friendship without limits" with the polish gov. I'm 100 % sure nobody wants a copy of Poland in EU Etc ... It will take time! We want you well! We want you safe! We will help! But from your end you need to keep your governments in check too... Forever

@david-eh1vg a strong democratic institution means that is solid enough to stand electing lunatics because that's happening sometimes. Democracy is built on institutions. You in America had strong democratic institutions. Since 1980's (Reagan got elected) your institutions are under attack some lasted longer then others, some didn't. Strong democratic institutions means independence from the politicians, like the justice system independence, social systems protected by their independence to not be destroyed if a corporatist goon get elected, army systemic independence to resist if a wannabe dictator got elected (most dictators get in power by elections first time), free and fair elections systems, strong independent media, etc.
