  1.  @klarion  you know it's not that simple . The terrain to the rocky tunnel hilly and you have to go through a city to get there . There is no good way of taking it outside of rushing down tskhinvali . By the time first russian units started going through the roki there were no Georgian units in any position to block that . Georgian had operational superiority for more like the first 24 hours . The first russian reinforcements got to tskhinvali by evening of the 8th . And russian cas halted pretty much all major Georgian attacks . Georgians had better infantry equipment but there is only so much they can do against tanks

  2.  @Caliell  even the north Caucasus federal district has 3 times the population Georgia has not to mention Russia had a huge upper hand in armour while Georgia lacked anti tank equipment . On a tacital level that meant that russian solders were basically invulnerable while Georgia was mainly reliant on light infantry which ment often times Georgian units physically couldn't do anything .not to mention air superiority which played a big role Also there are obviously other factors as a georgian I do admit that the russians had a better plan and Georgian high command gave up a lot of places without fighting gori ,kodori and tskhinvali didn't see Georgian forces push back but rather go out because of orders from up above

  6.  @Gorgoth_siberian  Russia literally invaded another country before 2014 those territories used be Ukrainian and now there 2 million Ukrainians who can't go to their homes . Also china hasn't recognised Crimea nor donbass doubt it was because of American influence

  8.  @klarion  it wasn't tremendous superiority . Granted Georgia initially outnumbered the defenders 2:1 and did have the advantage of first strike but there were many problems as well . The Georgian attack was organised in less than day , while russian forces had practiced for the situation since 2006 , secondly tskhinvali was and is a frotified town so naturally no military force could snap it finally while the goergian army did have superior infantry equipment , around 6k police were involved in the operation who didn't have superior equipment and also there was a ceasefire declared and all operations were halted by the georgian army between 15:00 and 18:00 . This gave the russian army a bit more time to bring up reinforcements . Considering all this the goergian army did well how you'd expect . Georgia did capture majority of tskhinvali initially and overrun the southern peacekeeper base while also taking the majority of important heights . The local forces were on the back foot and by no means we're holding off the georgians . They were loosing territory . With arrival of russian reinforcements and airpower Georgia started to loose . While Georgian infantry did have superior equipment , Russia used much more armour and air power . On a tactical level that meant that russian units were basically invincible . But the war did expose weakenses of the russian army in fields such as comminations , target acquisition , command and control , intelligence and scouting . neither did Russian training ,organisation nor doctrine win the 2008 war but heavy firepower and circumstance

  9.  @klarion  that must be one large battalion for it to contain 5000 men but whatever . Georgia had 10000 men and Russia too sent another 10000 men to reinforce. Russians didn't use better tactics or training than Georgians tho . Again an m-16 can't Peirce a t-80 so all the russians had to do is stay around 1 km away and blast away at Georgian formations who don't have anti tank equipment . Let the armour and the air force do the work . Even the worlds best special forces would loose a battle where there is no point shooting the enemie since no weapon in your inventory can deal damage to them

  10.  @klarion  combined arms operations would've been impossible in the Georgian army as it had a grand total of 75 tanks and 12 cas aircraft . No fighters or bombers . Very little armoured spaas and no Ballistic forces . The largest naval vessel Georgia had wasn't even frigget

  16.  @SI-cd7xs  Russia only needed to stop Georgia from taking south Ossetia and abkhazia. USA needed to fundamentally change Iraqi society and culture . USA didn't loose militarily . Isis was first cleared out of Iraq with us support .

  18.  @TheMasterInDisguise  the georgian high command didn't have an interest in fighting . The avrage Georgian solder could've fought but were ordered to withdraw . Outside of tskhinvali russian forces saw very little fighting because the high command decided to defend Tbilisi and Kutaisi . Keep in mind we are talking about the same army that when fighting russians and separatists in 1993 held out in sokhumi with just one battalion for 10 days against an outnumbering force . The battalion was wiped out . Morale on the ground level initially wasn't an issue but after the order to withdraw tskhinvali the trust in high command fell off

  20. Russians had t-72s and Georgians didn't have anything to deal with them . Russian forces fought Georgian forces from 8th of August till the 11th in tskhinvali and after the russian air force relentlessly bombed Georgian forces only did the georgian advance stop . Anyone can win a war when the you're basically invincible Georgian forces were ordered to move to Tbilisi . Unlikely that Russia could've taken it easily . You're talking about a city of 1 million people with 20k solders . Sure the russian advantage in armour and air superiority would win the day eventually but the cost of taking Tbilisi would much more than its worth.
