  4. Eastern Ukraine has minorities of ethnic russians while some regions have a russian majority that's not the case in most of them . Putins popularity was going down so to rile up the population Putin attacked Ukrainie and obviously Russia being a bigger nation won then annexed Crimea . Russian people liked the move made by Putin so his popularity went up again. Ukraine was also going more and more to the west which Russia seems to see a disaster because if Ukraine joins nato then they would loose it forever
