I am not sure that lawyer is correct. First, while one COULD make more money investing the lump sum, follow ups with past lottery winners suggest they don't actually achieve that goal. Start with a large fortune. Also, I am not sanguine about signing the ticket until one has spoken to a lawyer. I plan to set up a trust to accept my billion dollar winnings and one needs to sign correctly for that to happen. Moreover, if one loses the ticket, the finder likely won't be able to collect on it unless he can show he bought it. One can claim the ticket with proof of purchase.
