  1. Francis Scott Key did not really write the American national anthem. He wrote a poem, "Defence of Fort M'Henry," that was set to music about a week later. The song with Key's lyrics became known as "The Star-Spangled Banner." It very, very slowly gained in popularity as an unofficial anthem, finally achieving official status more than a century later under President Herbert Hoover.
