No, because of lobbying from oil and gas companies, and racist policies that had the white middle class live in an endless sea of suburbs, while the poor, blacks, and other minorities from Jews to Chinese people, in short the people who were unwanted by the state, were left to live in redlined districts that were deliberately neglected by their municipalities, and their communities were torn down to make room for highways and parking lots. People-centric, livable cities can absolutely work in the US, as proven by how... well, that's how they were originally, before most of downtown was razed to make room for the car, with no regards to the people actually living there.
I love the irony of all this being fine with you, but public transport would be "ripping cities apart" for some reason.
