Oh look, it's that knee-jerk reaction again. What if I told you there's a middle ground between car-centric status quo and everyone living in apartments? Can you imagine that? Or even that car-free cities and the way people live are two different discussions altogether? Thought you couldn't.
11
Yeah, NJB will do that to you.

Can't imagine what it must be like to live in a car-centric city and not be able to drive (due to vision impairment, a disability, etc.). Must be a nightmare. You'd be completely dependent on other people to drive you around.
8
If public transportation sucks, maybe the solution would be to improve public transportation so that you wouldn't need a car?
7
No. The world moves forward. You either move with it or get left behind.
6
You mean like the people in North American cities who are stuck in their houses all day because they can't drive due to medical reasons, or who can't afford cars? And who don't have alternatives because NA is car-centric? In a well-designed city, you can get around on public transit, or you can get a micro-car or other mobility vehicles, as Nishil pointed out. Plus in a well-designed society, things are much closer to you to begin with.

Please define communism with your own words.

Also you could simply make exceptions for people with disabilities. It'd be easier for them to get around since there'd be fewer other cars.
3
Still far more environmentally friendly than fossil fuel cars, even if their power comes from fossil fuels. But of course, the best option is to not drive a car at all.
3
Exactly. Property values go up because people-friendly, walkable, lively neighbourhoods are a huge improvement over car-centric development. Hence we should do more of the former and less of the latter.

@marlak4203 nice troll. Get it, you don't want to switch out your car because... biking would cost more. Got'cha.
3
Yeah, we've heard the "but india and china" excuse a million times. Think you need to take a step back and think.

Also trams and light rail. Even more capacity, and more attractive to passengers.

People are afraid of change. That's a big part of the issue.
2
@SirBlade666 way to misunderstand what they said.
2
No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing, as we say in northern Europe. And we've got plenty rain, snow, wind, and cold.
2
@adanactnomew7085 his point is the usual butwhataboutchina you always get from those people.
2
"Walking, what is this, Star Trek"? Seriously, though, what's horrifying is the idea of being forced to get everywhere by car, or be dependent on a neglected public transit system.
1
No one is proposing no vehicles. Drop the knee-jerk rections and try watching the vid.
1
Scandinavia handled covid wonderfully, thank you very much. And we use public transit a lot. Try again.
1
Do we really? I get everywhere I need to go on foot, on my bike, or using public transport. If I need something heavy moved, I just have it delivered to me (and before you say anything, no one is proposing all cars are banned from downtown, or that literally every street is closed off from cars, etc. Of course we'd still need delivery services, emergency vehicles, etc.).

Visited Oslo recently, really walkable city.

This movement seems to be gaining traction in the US, too, fortunately.
