  1. Who determines what merit is? Oh that's right, the people who are already at the top. Meaning merit simply related to success no matter how that success was achieved.

  2. You just proved his point... Meritocracy isn't as important or genuine as some claim precisely because there are people who can't read and people who can. The people who don't know how to read are claimed to deserve their condition while the ones who can read also deserve theirs. What this shows is a way to affirm the status quo.
