  2. The US designers could have had used coplanar canards, they just didn't think of it back then

  3. @TherealBoomStickBill  only for high (Rafale, Typhoon. F-4 with close coupled canards) low canards. Coplanars are inline with where the wings are positioned (X-36 comes to mind). It's not the end all be all.

  4. @kiwidiesel  These were high canards. Not coplanar/aligned with wing planform which is what you would use if you're trying to keep RCS down. I also heard that the high canard designs would have also messed up the emerging F 16 program I believe
