  12.  @konstantinkanev6287  It is possible to compare the Putin's war in Ukraine with the Vietnam war in many aspects. But your comparison a bit confusing. Ukraine is not a province of Russia; it never was and never will be. The Soviet Union (to which Ukraine belonged for sometime) was not Russia; this is often misunderstood. Vietnam was a single political entity before the Indochina war in which France lost and Vietnam was divided. USA involvement was in support of South Vietnam, to avoid the predictions of the "Domino Theory", that once Vietnam as a whole became communist all SouthEast Asia would follow the same path. Today we see clearly the Theory was completely wrong. No, USA is not the USA that fought in Vietnam; USA involvement in Ukraine is a NATO matter, in which European NATO states have the highest stakes and concerns. Europeans could not care much about USA struggles in Vietnam and did not come in its support. But an ambitious Russian regime that has no respect for legitimate international agreements and legal basis of governing and live with other nations represents a serious risk for the world order. This has to be contained. Russian can be economically and culturally a powerful respected country in the World, but it needs to respect the law and the others. It will learn.

  16. There are limits on how far a head of state (even a mafia run one like Russia) can drag the country into war. This is not about economics alone, it is about the drain and final destruction of his legitimacy and acceptability even by those who benefit the most from his rulings. There are many now thinking about ways of getting rid of Putin. Hitler and Stalin had very strong ideological bounds sustaining them in power to their very end. Putin does not have that; he tried to recreate the illusion of the glory of Russian Empire but every Russian knows the regime is a kleptocracy full of crooks stealing the wealth of the country for their own benefits. Putin is not a charismatic leader; he is a spy trained to oppress, blackmail, murder, steal and so on in the shadows. He is a creature of the silence and darkness, set to operate in secrecy. He is not a politician. He cannot gain and convince others in the broad daylight. He has no eloquence and never shines, even in staged propaganda films. His mask has fallen; most Russians already see who he is and what he is up to. Without ideology, legitimacy and political support, he is left to carry on oppressing, killing and destroying the shadow of his enemies. His power is rotten and his regime will collapse from within. That will not take long. The process has started and his paranoia is a proof if that.
