I do think the French Revolution is still impactful in the world, and people don't recognize it or misunderstand it. I think it is affecting us in the present, and I think it has been affecting us since it first happened. It's like a mind virus. I think it has a lot to do with "rational" philosophers of the era whose thoughts are still extremely popular, even if most people don't know who they are. To me, the "four horsemen" of the social apocalypse are Marx, Hegel, Bentham, and Malthus. The idea and mechanism of revolution comes from Marx. Hegel is the father of Progress, where people think new things are better, forgetting there is such a thing as regression. Bentham promoted Orwellian hedonism over morality. Malthus was Patient Zero of the desire for depopulation.
In a nutshell: the French Revolution told people that hedonism was enlightenment, and that it would lead to utopia, liberty, and equality. What it lead to was oppression, loss of freedom and privacy, and endless warfare. People should not have been surprised by this, because hedonism is socially slippery. People who are hedonistic don't stick together. Morality is socially sticky. Morals are what binds friends, families, and communities together. Morality is what resulted in the birth of civilization. Without morality, there is anarchy until the strongest person establishes tyranny.
