It's the wise v the unwise, all across the West. One thing the wise can do is to separate from the unwise. While the wise can learn from disciplined thought experiments and the experiences of others - like from history - the unwise can only learn from their own experience. So they believe that this time, socialism is going to work. They believe renewable energy is better than oil. They believe smoking pot every day and eating loads of sugar is healthy, and the inspirational notion "you can be whatever you want to be" is to be taken literally, as in "I am a cat." If you are wise, separate from the unwise, so they can learn from the error of their ways, instead of blaming you for everything that's going wrong in their lives. Go live with other wise people.
