What I've found to work for my cat with kidney disease is a little bacon every day with her regular dry food, or ham fat instead of bacon if her protein tolerance has become very low. Once or twice a week, or as needed, I give her two drops of a herbal kidney tincture (for humans) in about 0.8 ml of water, which I squirt into her mouth with a small syringe (no needle). Very rarely, I have given her subcutaneous fluids, as needed. A couple times I gave her a small squirt or two of baby electrolyte when her back legs got wobbly (indicating low potassium). The herbal tincture has a variety of herbs, including buchu leaves and uva ursi, which are good for preventing UTI. It's still possible to get a UTI, since kidney cats are prone to it, but it's far less likely. I think she only got a UTI once, which we resolved with antibiotics.
She was diagnosed in September of 2017, and they gave me hundreds of dollars of medicines she wouldn't take, and she wouldn't eat the special food. They estimated she had about 25% kidney function remaining. She's still alive, as of November 2022, lounging on my bed as I write. She was about 12 when she was diagnosed. They said she probably had a few months to live, and in the best case scenario, about 2 years. She might be getting close to the end of life by now, but we've long surpassed the original projections.
Best wishes to all with your cats! 🐈
