What I read is that J Edgar Hoover was feeding McCarthy information, not altruistically, but to set forces against each other.

@saucyrossy3698 I don't feel like I have all the answers. I just wanted to share that possible data point. The FBI has been crooked the whole time, working for the Democrats, and possibly in bed to some degree with the communists after WW2. But like Mao, Mussolini, and Hitler - who all favored a corrupt surveillance state at home - they didn't want Russia to be the one in charge of it.
