Engines compensate for booms by having multiple alternating cylinders. Unfortunately, what has happened in the modern world is they've tried to "minimize risk" by tying everything together. But this should be seen more as being like a big city made of wood. If one burns, it can easily spread to everything and take it all down. Or, if you have skyscrapers literally tied to one another, if one goes down, it pulls all the rest with it. We need to go back to how we used to manage forests. We know that financial "fires" are going to happen, so we need to be prepared to accept them and minimize the impact to the forest / economy. You don't do that by tying them all together and making them "too big to fail."
