  1. What it looks like to me is that Russia is preparing for a successful winter operation ... by Ukraine. To counter the expected summer offensive by Ukraine, they have been keeping their men in the field for too long, and in high numbers. Now they're opening what is basically a new front in the east. It seems like they're betting the farm on Ukraine doing nothing in the autumn and winter. Now, I have no idea what Ukraine could do during the winter. But it seems likely that Russian troops will be at their ebb at that point.
