Comments by "" (@SG-js2qn) on "The TRUTH About Black Africans In Ancient Rome" video.
FWIW, the Africans most commonly encountered by Romans would likely have been the lighter skinned northern Africans, "dark" Mediterraneans, plus even lighter skinned Europeans. Race, based on skin color, is a modern construct, coming from Progressives and eugenics. Previously, the term race was used in the sense of tribe or lineage. "Mela" is honey colored. So brown. I'm sure there were some darker skinned Africans encountered, but they generally lived too distant from the empire to be other than rare.
