I'm a somewhat older person, and I remember my elderly 5th and 6th grade teachers, plus a high school history teacher - all women - being softly opposed to women's lib and the vote. They didn't really speak out against it, because they would have faced opposition at the time, but it was clear this was their sentiment. Their formative years would have been in the 1910s and 20s. Both of my grandmothers, however, who were of that generation, would have been personalities more forward than what Malcolm projects, so I think he may be not quite getting the nature of the culture in that era. Simone is probably more on target. My impression is that female nature has been the same right along, just as it is today. What we're seeing today is just what hormones do to women, and the lack of self-awareness women tend to have, which results in a lot of odd behavior. Men have the advantage of being studied and guided, with hero roadmaps all over in literature and film. Women, on the other hand, are treated as chaos goblins and princesses of unearned virtue; that is, no map.
