Actually, it's probably more accurate to say the men were trappers, not exactly hunters, for the vast majority of the time humans have been humans. Women are always associated with the home, which is where the children are. That's not because of a patriarchy holding them down, it's the natural inclination created by hormones and instinct. Men, on the other hand, have a hormone that encourages them to explore, to create, and take risks.
Basically, humans would have been like the ape version of a wolf pack, steering herd animals off cliffs, or into pits where they could then be safely speared. Humans learned to set up primitive fences to channel prey into kill zones.
