The Democrats, military, and media forced the country into the Spanish-American War. McKinley (R) was conveniently assassinated by a "lone gunman." The Democrats then passed the 16th Amendment to begin the income tax, which would fund the expansion of the federal bureaucracy and military, and endless war began. This is what Gen. Smedley Butler complained about with "War Is A Racket," because the US was going to war to serve the desires of the connected corporate powers, military industrial complex, and banks.
