I don't think it's much of a comfort, perhaps, but we have been in possibly worse situations before, and have pulled through. Yes, this one is looking bad, and it is frustrating that we should get challenged like this when it's so obvious we should be doing so many things differently ... better.
But keep in mind that in the beginning of the 1900s we imprisoned thousands of innocent people in camps, we censored the mail, we segregated our gov't offices, and we turned over our Treasury operations to a cabal of the most powerful banks. We lost many people in a disastrous war, after which we said "Never again!" The FBI was enlarged. That was under Wilson.
A generation after that, we "elected" FDR four times (probably not really). Again, we put thousands of innocent people in camps, with all the collateral damage associated with that (dead pets, ruined businesses, lost homes, etc.). FDR made it illegal for citizens to own gold. We created the CIA. We dropped the bomb.
And that's before the JFK assassination, the assassination of his brother, and of MLK. And so many, many other things, like the revelation of the COINTELPRO and MK-Ultra programs. Nothing much has changed. We're still fighting against the domestic deep state and foreign communism. And we have had the 1st and 2nd amendment throughout.
