It's the Great Game, the endless tournament of shadows between the British Empire and the Russian Empire. The Russian Empire / USSR / modern Russia has been steady in its aims through the centuries. It wants to control the entire continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from the Arctic to the Indian. Iran, an oil producing country supplying Europe, was a key resource that Russia wanted. In the same time frame, the USSR was also active in neighboring Afghanistan. IMO, Mahyar has it wrong that the CIA was with the mullahs and against the Shah. I don't want to defend the CIA, but if anything they screwed this up.
