Quinces are high in vitamin C, even when dried, so dried quince would have been ideal for long sea journeys. Not sure why it never caught on. Adobo is basically a marinade, probably related to "to daub" in English, as in a Medieval kitchen the marinade would be daubed on the meat as it roasts on a spit. Today we'd call it ... BBQ sauce. ;)

@Erewhon2024 A quince isn't the most friendly fruit, true. But they can be thinly sliced and dried. There's also different kinds of quince, with some more ready to eat and others less so.
