To be clear, Australia does not dispute the legitimacy of these two ships sailing through these waters, as they have every right under international law in international waters. The question asked was about the use of military grade laser equipment, aimed at the RAAF aircraft. On the other side of the coin, what was this aircraft doing in the vicinity of these ships, if it was on a supposed training sortie. Undoubtedly dropping sonar buoys to check for submarine activity, being a guise for spying on these ships. After all, it was fully fitted with up to date high tech electronic surveillance equipment. Australia, you can't have it both ways!

@CamMac-kd1ou since when do we define "economic" zones. This is political garbage. So it is ok for US, Australian, British, Dutch and other countries war ships, including several aircraft carriers to traverse the south china sea, to intimidate China, but close to home this should not happen? The world is one, and people should be respecting it as a One World, for all. The whinging and statements made by Morrison was childish, given the nature of the visit by the RAAF plane, which was in reality not on a training sortie, but on a spy sortie. Training missions by a single aircraft would not be carried out in the Arafura Sea, but more likely in the Gulf of Carpentaria, similar to those commonly carried out in the Spencer Gulf, many years ago. So provocation generally will receive responsive provocation. Look at both sides!
