Full Metal Jacket rounds were developed for warfare to make it more human. The mini ball was even worse than the tested balls and went further. The British used rounds meant to expand against non-Europeans. The rounds were originally made at Dum-Dum (SP? Usually this spelling) Arsenal in India. Most of today's self defense rounds probably violate at least one of the various conventions (Hague or Geneva) on warfare. By the a shotgun firing a rifled slug (especially a rifled barrel firing a slug) gives a good impression of a civil war rifled musket firing a mini ball.
