  1. Slavery never took off in the small farm Northern colonies, there was no crop available there that could support slavery. Also, both Plymouth and Virginia colonies predate 1619. Using the arrival of a slave from a British Caribbean Island as a starting date is foolish. The first legal mention of permanent slavery about 40 years later. Until the court sentenced a runaway Black indentured individual to permanent slavery; until then, Blacks from Africa were actually treated legally the same as European indentured servants.
