Was it wrong to execute them? First what was the rules of war - to be treated as a POW, you had to be in uniform; if you engaged in a military operation, you had to be in an identifiable uniform or you were an illegal combatant, spies were allowed to be executed; however torture is also illegal. So, I have mixed feelings on the issue. I won't condemn executions; however, the torture is unacceptable; but the method of execution was normal for spies who were taken alive. So each of us must decide for ourselves. That there were other options is true, at least several spies captured by the British were turned into double agents, and were treated reasonably well. A moral quandary.
