The Bataan Death March was less an intentional than a cluster f--k on both the US and Japanese parts. The Japanese underestimated in how many prisoners would be captured, so the amount of food available was inadequate. The Japanese lacked enough vehicles to transfer the prisoners, so the march to the railhead and from it. As Japanese units passed the column some gave food while others beat them, it depended on how well controlled the unit was. On the

US side, there was no order or discipline. When the head of the column reached food and water (which was less than needed because of more prisoners than expected) both the food and water was struggled over resulting in some getting it and others not; while only spoiled food and water remained for the end of the column. A good read is "War without Mercy", it destroys alot of the propaganda on both sides. You should also remember that war in Asia was a very different thing than war in Europe historically. During the Warlord period in China, many of the same atrocity charges that were leveled against the Japanese during the 2nd Sino-Japanese War were leveled against the different warlords' armies.
