Huge piles of human heads of all people who lived in a resisting towns/cities was a Mongol tactic to terrify other peoples. Those piles included men, women and children. Horrors and cruelty wasn't just a European thing.

  2. By the way when a siege was required, the troops couldn't be controlled when the attackers got into the city. Since loot was considered part of their pay, breaking into the homes of the besieged to loot them resulting in murder and rape. Surrender before assault sometimes prevented the uncontrolled looting, murder and rape or at least mitigated that. War in the Middle Ages was a full contact sport without either mercy or rules.
