June 19th wasn`t when the Black population was notified about slaveries end. It was the date when one community in Texas was told about the Emancipation Proclamation (it took later Constitutional Amendment to formally ended slavery). It is an artificial holiday to me, the holiday should be when the Amendment ending slavery legally.

@JonJaeden No, the 13th was December 1865 (months after June 19th), 14th was July 1868 and it made the freed Blacks citizens, and 15th Amendment was in 1870 which granted voting rights. On June 19th 1865 the Black slaves in Galveston Texas were told of the Emancipation Proclamation, and slavery was still legal under the Constitution, Black Americans weren't citizens and they did not have full rights under the law. So, all the joy of those freed Texas slaves was legally premature. The 13th Amendment was adopted in December 1865. That should be the date of the holiday.

@lilyred8120 The truth matters not myths. I don't begrudge having a holiday due to the end of slavery, but it should actually reflect when chattle slavery legally ended.
