First, I am White, an former military officer/commander; so these are my opinions. First, more Blacks that I knew believed in working hard studying and getting ahead. However, younger people often felt more entitled. Most of my Black NCOs and older Black officers did not like affirmative action because it took away from all the work they did to get where they were. One Black Senior Master Sergeant said it best, he felt that affirmative action made him suspect when he transferred bases, this from one of the sharpest NCOs in the organization. One of the best Lieutenant Colonels that I worked for was a Black man who started as an Enlisted Airman, and went to college while serving, and eventually was commissioned. He was harder on young Black airmen than most officers. He could have been a full Colonel if he wanted, he was satisfied with where he was, his family was his priority when I knew him. In other words, like all other groups there is no commonality among Black men except for meaningless skin color.
