He actually resigned to avoid serving against his state. He finally offered to join the South only after the Union invaded. Virginia. He believed in states rights, if Virginia had stayed with the Union, so would he; and probably would have lead the watr against the South. Remember, a hero in the Mexican-American War and commandant of West Point; he would have been the logical choice.

The problem was the USA had an authorized army of around 8,000 men and under manned as well. Mexico, had something over 32,000 men in their army, not counting local militia. The two parties had almost agreed on terms that would have resolved a peaceful resolution; however, the newspapers of the time showed that the English ambassador pushed against this. He especially pointed out the Mexican army's experience since it had been fighting for years and had a 4 to 1 advantage. The ambassador pointed out the failure of the USA's militia during the War of 1812. This led the Mexican government to become unwilling to compromise. Unfortunately, the British ambassador didn't recognize the changes in the USA militia laws since the War of 1812, which made it far more effective. You need to se a rich on material printed at the time, not just modern materials.

I guess that this video maker doesn't really know history. Before the invasion of Poland Germany had made a treaty with Stalin's Soviet Union, the agreement was made to split Poland and give the Soviet's most of Eastern Europe, think the Winter War against Finland and invasions of the three Baltic states. So, in my estimation the Soviets started the war in a loose alliance that divided Europe into spheres of influence. It is very interesting that the Soviets got most it wanted from Germany from the Allies. To me Russia played both ends against the other. As anyone's ally, the Soviets weren't trust worthy. Also remember Soviet armies were located in locations where they could start an attack, and the border defenses removed, so was Stalin planning a stab in the back but was double crossed first.
