It had been held together by the force and strength of one man, and the puni shment of those who didn't obey him. In the Americas, both the incan and Aztecs fell as much due to the revolt of constitutent parts who used the Spanish arrival and initial successes as the power of the small Spanish forces involved. The easiest cleavage points to exploint in any country are: language, culture, race/ethnicity, unique regional needs and religion. The more of these issues present the easier it is to destroy the whole.
