In 1955 East Germany also made some attempt but it failed. The Hungarian revolt was far more successful; the Soviet troops there were hesitant to fire on fellow Eastern Europeans. The Russians were chased out, and a non-Soviet government was established. Here is where it gets interesting, the US State Department sent a message to the Russians (I have a copy of this message that was provided during and International Relations masters class) that the US did not desire the formation of a hostile government bordering Russia at this time. After this, Soviet troops that reinvaded Hungary were from the Far East and Central Asia (far less likely to show sympathy with the insurrectionist.

It looks like my comment has disappeared, so a repeat. I have a copy of the telegraph message sent to the Soviets after the communist fell. It essentially said the the US would not support a government hostile to the Soviet Union on the Soviet Union's border at that time. The reinvasion took place shortly there after; with the main forces being troops from non-European areas of the Soviet Union (the original Soviet occupation troops and those loyal to the government having show a marked unwillingness to firing on the Hungarian people). The message was provided during an International Relations masters level class taught by a retired colonel. If claims are true, some Russian troops aren't happy to fire on the Ukrainianns; the big difference this time was the Ukraine was already a non-occupied state and its getting at least Western arms.

@mduduzisibanda5035 Lenin, Stalin, Putin have killed up to 50,000,000 while Mao and subsequent leaders killed between 50,000,000 and 100,000,000 million not counting the Chinese Civil War, Korea and the Invasion of Vietnam. So, with out mentioning the minor communist murders (Pol Pot being a foremost practitioner of the fine art of murder when he killed around 1,500,000 out of a population of 4,500,000), these practicianers of the gentle leftist government far exceed any thing done by the West in centuries in little more than 100 years. By the way, national socialists and fascists are actually the right wing of the socialist movement and were first called right-wing by Stalin who mainly objected that they didn't kneel to Moscow.
