The Senate was elected for six year terms to insulate from a demagogue gaining too much power by gaining a temporary majority. It was to slow down changes to insure that they actually represented more than the emotions of the moment. More importantly, the Senators were selected by the state legislatures to represent the state's interest so that a small group of powerful people didn't override the interests of the smaller states. This started being undone by direct election which gave. Political parties greater power, the staggered election further increased the chance of changes created on an emotional push by a demagogue. Can we return to the original concepts, I doubt it. Can we at least keep an emotionally driven majority oppressing the minority and their interests.

@thesciguy4823 My granduncle sat at a Thanksgiving table after President Kennedy was elected and laughed about how the Democrat Machine stole the election in Chicago and Cook County which than stole Illinois. Why was that important, he was a 28 years Democrat member of the city council of a Cook County suburb and a leader in the party in both Chicago and the county. Very little has changed but the leadership of that Machine.

As to likening them to Southern Democrats of old, which party supports resegregating the US? If you guessed the Progressive Democrats, you were right.
