  1. My family has that problem, the last name that we have now either was a regional location such as vom (from the) or title as von (of the). I have found the von present in Germany; while the vom would be easy like Charles then from the "regional" area. My grand father changed his names during or soon after WWI. He was originally baptised Wilhelm Hermann August "our last name" to William Herman "our last name". I haven't used our last name since i can't say if my brother and sister would approve of putting it up on the net. I know that there was some communication with family in Germany until after the Nazis took power, at that point the family began to down play German ties, remember the anti-German backlash during WWI. In the Midwest at least that included some lynchings (don't speak German or have a German name in the wrong community). I am rambling, but the point is that two wars have also made tracing ancestry hard between attitudex and damaged records.
