A little history, lynching was named for British land manager in Ireland who executed people without courts. It was the common way of enforcing some form of law on the frontier where the law either had no formal presence. Small ranchers and farmers couldn't go hundreds of miles to set in a court room while a trial took place. Lynching slowed once laws were enforced locally with courts that were close enough for witnesses to attend. Was it used racially as well, and that was wrong, but it isn't only racism.

This event is not strictly about race. It was part of a larger pattern of violence after WWI. The Ametican Expeditionary Force was mostly White, and they came back to find their jobs had been given to Blacks. These were men hardened and accustomed to violence. Many found their families harmed because of no money, lost of ther homes; they found Blacks there in those jobs and in some cases their homes. The wealthy and political figures didn't do anything to help those veterans; instead they ignored or even supported racist groups because it distracted from the wealthy and politicians. So, yes the event was racist, but it had more than just racism.

The historian is right. Perhaps December 6th should be the holiday.
