F-104 wasn't really an air superiority fighter. It was intended for shooting down bombers. The plane was later used for other purpises; as a result its loss rate is skewed.

@AirwayZombie I disagree, look at the basic design. Very fast both in speed and climb rate. Not able to quickly maneuver with a limited supply of ammunition, i.e. two missiles. Its origin was as a bomber interceptor. Its relatively short operational life span in USAF in its intended role. I suspect if you go back to books and articles written earlier, you may find something very different than you believe. I probably have a few years on you and remember what was written then.
