  1. Rged by Carlson who as a friend of the family; not the senior Marinef officers. Carlson's battalion used much of Carlson's observations of the Communist guerillas. Its first mission, while a success, had a number of negative elements including murdering and mutilating Japanese prisoners and leaving men behind in a badly conducted withdrawal. The men left behind were executed for war crimes ("check the book "War Without Mercy").
