For all of the dummies here comparing life as a serf in the Middle Ages to the modern world, bear in mind it was the rise of Calvinism and the capitalism it inspired that put an end to the misery of the feudal system via something called the enclosure movement. There's a substantial difference between being a serf and being an individual in an indirect exchange industrial capitalist economy, namely that you own your own labor and receive the fruits thereof and have the ability to save and try to become what you so choose, if you have the personal discipline. You would think that being free of a feudal Lord would have been seen as quite an opportunity by the serfs, but no, like today people hate personal responsibility and where outraged by the enclosure movement and being thrown off, even if it meant an end to feudal obligation. So many people seem to be shockingly pathetic and think that they are supposed to be given everything they want for free. Well, if you want to be slaves go for it but I will take indirect capitalist exchange any day!
